ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons’ football opened the 2017 with a bang as the Cowboys beat Texas College 74-0 on Saturday afternoon at an energetic Shelton Stadium.
The shutout was the first for the Cowboys since 2012. It also was the 10th straight win for the Cowboys against scholarship schools.
The Cowboys’ defense came out and immediately forced a three-and-out to get the ball to the offense. It took the Cowboys just :45 to go 67 yards in three plays for a touchdown. Landry Turner, making his first career start, hit Reese Childress on a 62-yard touchdown pass.
The defense forced another punt that was snapped out of the end zone for a safety. On the Cowboys’ first play of the next drive, freshman quarterback Marc Reed took the snap and went over the right side and then sprinted away from the defense for a 67-yard touchdown run and HSU took a 16-0 lead just 4:07 into the game and the outcome was never in doubt after that.
On TC’s next possession, Cody Taylor broke through to block a Steer field goal attempt of 32 yards. Turner was intercepted on the next possession, but once again, the defense came up strong and did not allow TC to score.
Freshman placekicker Luis Diaz kicked a 28-yard field goal for the Cowboys on the next possession. After another fourth-down stop by the defense, HSU punched it in on a 38-yard Jaquan Hemphill touchdown run. The defense came up with another fourth-down stop on a sack by Matthew Hawkins. Turner then drove the Cowboys 52 yards in six plays and he hit Alex Bell for a 10-yard touchdown pass.
Another forced punt, and the Cowboys went 74 yards in five plays and Turner hit Childress on a 34-yard touchdown pass to make it 40-0 with :16 to play in the first half.
On the first drive of the second quarter, Zai Zai Smith went 47 yards and had the ball punched out at the 1-yard line but Hayden Day was there to cover it up in the end zone for a touchdown.
After another defensive stop, Turner hit Devonte’ Walker on a 30-yard touchdown pass to make it 54-0 with 10:54 to play in the third quarter.
It ended the day for Turner and he was impressive going 15-for-18 for 264 yards and four touchdowns.
HSU made it 61-0 on the first play of the fourth quarter when Kavan Johnson scored the first touchdown of his career on an 8-yard run. Ty Hooper hit Matt Sandoval for a 19-yard touchdown pass on the next possession for the first career touchdown for both players. Nate Everett had the final touchdown for the Cowboys with 2:32 to play on a 1-yard run.
The Cowboys rolled up 596 yards of total offense and limited the Steers to 136 yards. HSU ran the ball for 322 yards in the contest.
Bell had eight catches for 81 yards and Childress had 96 yards on two catches, both which were touchdowns. Hemphill had 85 rushing yards on just five carries and had three catches for 24 yards. Reed had 85 yards on the ground.
Josh White led the defense with nine tackles. Matthew Hawkins and Eriq Mitchell each had seven tackles. Jason Parker had nine tackles and two sacks to pace TC. Sean Stell was 10-for-24 for 114 yards for Texas College.
The Cowboys open American Southwest Conference play when they host Louisiana College at 1 p.m. next Saturday. Texas College fell to 0-2 on the year.
