McMurry rally comes up short vs. Ozarks

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University men's basketball suffered its first American Southwest Conference loss of the season, when its second-half comeback came up short in a 69-64 setback at the hands of the University of the Ozarks at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks (2-3, 2-1 ASC) battled back from a 17-point deficit in the first half and caught the Eagles (3-4, 1-1 ASC) late, before eventually seeing the game slip away down the stretch.

McMurry held a 9-8 lead with 15:33 left in the first half. However, the War Hawks hit a cold streak and UO would out-score the hosts, 26-8, over the next 13 minutes to reach its largest lead of the game, 34-17. The Eagles still held a 37-22 cushion going into the halftime locker room.

UO kept its double-digit advantage through the early portion of the first half, still holding a 13-point – 56-43 – lead with 11:58 remaining to be played. But the War Hawks would begin a run of their own, 17-4, over a span of just under six minutes. The spree began with a short jumper by Khalil Butler and came to fruition when Butler converted a layup to make it 60-60 with 6:05 on the game clock.

The score stood at 62-62 with just under four minutes left. But it was the Eagles who created separation down the stretch, out-scoring McM by a 7-2 margin the rest of the way.

McMurry had a trio of players – Dedrick Berry Jr., LaRandall Scroggins and Aaron Gettys – each score 10 points to pace the War Hawks' scoring. Berry had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Scroggins notched his third-consecutive double-double game, by also pulling down a game-leading 10 rebounds.

Darius Watts and Butler finished with eight and seven points, respectively. Colin Taylor added five, while Brandon Bullock, Luke Stephenson and Zacc Carter each booked four points. Krishawn Terry had one bucket to round out McM's scoring.

Bullock and Carter each had a pair of blocked shots, as McMurry amassed five "swats" as a team. Scroggins had the other rejection.

The War Hawks' backcourt did a good job taking care of the basketball, with the squad committing a season-low six turnovers (and forcing the Eagles into 14 mistakes).
McMurry will travel to San Marcos on Wednesday evening for an exhibition game versus Texas State University. Tip-off versus the Bobcats is scheduled for 7 p.m.
