ABILENE, Texas – In a clash of American Southwest Conference women’s basketball divisional leaders, McMurry University came out on the short end of a 75-69 score versus East Texas Baptist University at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks fell to 7-6 overall and 5-2 in the ASC, while the Tigers upped their record to 11-1 and an unblemished 5-0 in league.
McMurry scored the first five points of the game and led by nine at the end of the first period, 21-12. McM attained its largest lead of the game, 13 points, in the second quarter after a Sham Hunter jumper made it 26-13 with 7:55 left. The Tigers raced back and cut the War Hawks’ cushion to 31-29 at the half.
A trey by Monica Jones helped McM to a six-point lead, 44-38, with 5:20 left in the third. But ETBU closed the stanza on a 16-3 run to grab a 54-47 lead it would not relinquish, eventually leading by as much as 11 points.
The resilient War Hawks refused to go away, however. McM chipped away and got to within a single possession after a three-ball by Hunter made it 67-64 with 2:16 remaining. McMurry still trailed by three with 15 seconds remaining, but the Tigers converted three of four free throws for the 75-69 win.
McMurry sophomore Skyler Reyna notched her third-consecutive double-double game - and fifth double-double of the season – by tallying 17 points and 13 rebounds. Reyna drilled 6-of-14 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also had three assists.
Hunter and Jones each finished the afternoon with 14 points. Hunter pulled down seven rebounds, as well as dishing off four assists, blocking two shots and making a pair of steals.
Jones – who went 5-of-12 from the field – buried 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Jones had two assists and two steals, as well.
Sarah Doherty was the War Hawks’ fourth double-figure scorer, with 11 points. Doherty hit three of her four field goals made in the game from long range. She matched Jones for the team lead with four assists.
London Weilert nailed a pair of three-balls to account for her six points in the books.
The War Hawks return to action on Thursday (Jan. 11) when they host Concordia University-Texas at Kimbrell Arena. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
