Wright named Madness Southland WBB POTW

ABILENE – Abilene Christian sophomore guard Breanna Wright Monday was named Southland Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadness.com in recognition of her efforts during the Wildcats' victories vs. McNeese (W, 80-75) and Southeastern Louisiana (W, 86-80).

Wright extended her double-figure scoring streak to seven games this week in helping the Wildcats (10-4) get off to a 4-0 start in Southland Conference play. First, she scored 17 points in a five-point win at McNeese thanks to a career best performance from the free-throw line (12-13), and Saturday she totaled 20 points vs. Southeastern La., finishing the contest 4-of-5 from the field with two 3-pointers and four free throws.

Wright's 16-17 week at the charity stripe lifted her season percentage to .891 (49-55), which ranks her first within the Southland Conference and 14th nationally. She also ranks among the conference and national leaders with a 1.97 assist / turnover ratio and 4.6 assists per game.

College Sports Madness identifies the players who have had the greatest impact to their team from each conference and on a national basis each Monday. The women's basketball players who have achieved national honors for this past week were:

National Player of the Week: Syracuse forward Miranda Drummond

High-Major Player of the Week: BYU guard Malia Nawahine

and Mid-Major Player of the Week: Cal Poly guard Dynn Leaupepe

A listing of all conference Players of the Week can be found here.

Wright today also was an honorable mention choice by the Southland Conference voters, finishing behind POTW Cassidy Barrios of Nicholls and Central Arkansas' Kierra Jordan.

A student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots to earn honorable mention.

Wright and the Wildcats return to action Wednesday at 7 p.m. vs. Houston Baptist.
