Former Astro Berkman speaks out against equal rights ordinance

Former Astro and Rice baseball player Lance Berkman has spoken out against and urged Houstonians to vote no on Proposition 1, also known as the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), which will be on the city ballot for the general election on Nov. 3.

Berkman gave his name and voice to Campaign for Houston, an anti-HERO cause, in a public service announcement that was released Thursday. Berkman's message for Campaign for Houston is one minute long and was recorded for local radio.

"Proposition 1 would allow troubled men who claim to be women to enter women’s bathrooms, showers and locker rooms," Berkman said in the recording. "It’s better to prevent this danger by closing women’s restrooms to men rather than waiting for a crime to happen. Join me to stop the violation of privacy and discrimination against women.”
