Pick No. 9. As discussed before, picking ninth is a bit of a toss up. It’s too in the middle to try and make a deal and everything from legends to busts have been selected ninth. The Spurs selected Jeremy Sochan (pronounced so-han), a forward out of Baylor. While there’s a lot of highlight film out there on him and while he’s still very raw, the potential is definitely there. Here are five things to know of the newest Spur.
He can attack the basket
Like most freshmen, Sochan is very unrefined. His feel is a little off and he throws up some tough shots, shots that don’t always go in. But, that being said, he is good at getting to those spots where he likes to take those shots. When operating from the wings he can penetrate into the mid range or finish at the cup. He’s long and likes to spin, his scoring is not totally there yet but he’ll absolutely benefit from having an elite initiator like Dejounte Murray.
He can defend
His defense is probably one of the main reasons he was selected here. The Spurs have a history of being a defense first team and it doesn’t look like that is changing. Sochan is long, he’s listed at 6-foot-9, but can absolutely play bigger. He knows when to help off the ball and showed he can occasionally protect the rim and guard bigger players. He’s got a way of being not just athletic, but also smart on the court. All of which is very Spursian, fitting into the franchise nicely in that aspect.
