A lawsuit against the Los Angeles Clippers by a former strength and conditioning coach alleges he was retaliated against and unlawfully fired. In his complaint, he details his relationship with Kawhi Leonard, including that the Los Angeles team used him to start courting the star when he was a San Antonio Spur after his disastrous injury during Game 1 of the 2017 Western Conference Finals.
According to the lawsuit, which was filed on October 24, Randy Shelton claims "the Clippers began their efforts to pursue Leonard indirectly through Shelton" after the team "sens[ed] some discontent between the super star Leonard and the Spurs" as Leonard sought second opinions for the injury. Reports say he was medically cleared to return to play for the Spurs at the time. Leonard and the Spurs entered a 5-year, $60 million contract in July 2015.
Shelton claims he had "a well-publicized relationship" with Leonard after the player's time at San Diego State, where Shelton worked with Leonard as a strength and conditioning coach. Leonard hired Shelton after his selection in the 2011 NBA Draft to the Spurs to "prepare him for the NBA," and the two men maintained a personal relationship through 2017, the lawsuit says.
