Prep football lessons learned from weekend

Antioch's 6-foot-3, 215-pound running back was touted as the East Bay's top sophomore after showing well when called up late last season.

Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa quarterback Jordan Brookshire overcame a shaky start and piled up 406 yards and accounted for five touchdowns in a 56-32 win over Churchill County (Nev.).

The Eagles' No. 4 preseason ranking was their highest in at least two decades, but even without six transfers they were counting on - including the nation's No. 2 recruit, Kahlil McKenzie - they rolled up 565 yards (505 on the ground, with 217 and three scores from Miles Harrison) - in a 55-7 win over Carson (Nev.).

Coach Michael Peters raved about his senior class and then received a gift in transfer Kevin Davidson, a highly touted 6-3, 215-pound junior quarterback.

With 18 returning starters from its North Coast Section Division IV title team, the Panthers opened with a 39-6 home rout of Moreau Catholic-Hayward.

Known largely for game-breakers over the years, Pittsburg and San Ramon Valley each forced five turnovers and combined for seven interceptions in tough opening wins Friday, the Pirates 19-7 over California-San Ramon and San Ramon Valley 44-17 over Las Lomas-Walnut Creek.

With the state's No. 2 tight-end recruit Tyler Petite, strong-armed quarterback Jack Stephens, wideout Caleb Whalen and returning top rusher Nick Fadelli, the Cougars should put up bushels of points.
