San Francisco high schools have big cleats to fill

Among the public schools, The Chronicle's San Francisco Player of the Year and first-team All-Metro quarterback Kyle Nelson (3,448 total yards, 58 touchdown passes) of Galileo is gone.

From the West Catholic Athletic League, St. Ignatius graduated three-year starter Elijah Dale (the WCAL Most Valuable Running Back), and Riordan lost three-year starting quarterback Zach Masoli, one of the school's best athletes in recent history.

Jordan Defiesta (Sacred Heart Cathedral): The 5-8, 170-pound senior defensive back and receiver is the only returning first-team all-WCAL player from the city.

Helped by a big, strong offensive line, he and sophomore Akeal Lalaind (5-11, 185) will try to replace Marzetta and Telfor at running back.
