Before diving back into football next Friday, here's a look at 10 big high school sports developments over the summer:
Eleven years after author Neil Hayes finished an entire year dissecting the De La Salle-Concord football program with a book, "When the Game Stands Tall," it opens Friday nationally as a major Hollywood movie production.
The 6-foot-4, 341-pound senior committed to Tennessee at Nike's "The Opening" summer camp on the same day he was voted top defensive lineman in the camp for top recruits.
According to Clayton Valley coach Tim Murphy, McKenzie's eligibility for the season is being decided by the North Coast Section office.
The nation's top incoming junior basketball player, Josh Johnson, a 6-6 guard from Detroit, announced in July that he'll be attending Justin-Siena (Napa) this fall while playing at Prolific Prep, a new basketball academy in Napa that won't play a high school schedule.
At least two other top recruits from out of the area have announced they'll be playing for Prolific Prep, which is an after-school program.
Bishop O'Dowd-Oakland's 6-10 post Ivan Rabb, ESPN's top-rated incoming senior, sprained an ankle and played sparingly for the Under-17 USA team in Dubai.
The United States won the gold medal and Rabb averaged 10 minutes, 4.8 points, 3.3 rebounds per game and shot a team-high 75 percent.
Serra offensive lineman Jack Dreyer (Stanford), Foothill quarterback Kyle Kearns (SMU), Mitty tight end Thomas Hudson (Arizona State), Acalanes-Lafayette lineman Brady Aiello (Oregon), Casa Grande kicker Matt Abramo (Washington State), Las Lomas lineman Noah Myers (Washington State) and Campolindo-Moraga tight end Tyler Petite (Duke).
