Could De La Salle, Campolindo be in for down year in football?

Six weeks before the start of the high school football season, juggernaut programs De La Salle-Concord and Campolindo-Moraga appear vulnerable.

The Spartans, who haven’t lost a game to a Northern California opponent since 1991, return just three starters from last year’s state Open Division title team and feature only one three-star recruit, senior safety Tre White.

“We’ll have to try out some kids just so we have enough linemen,” Campolindo head coach Kevin Macy said.

“Maybe it’s a down year for them and maybe they don’t have the Division I studs they normally do, but you can never underestimate them,” Pittsburg senior lineman Sergio Vargas Jr. said.

Pittsburg’s more immediate focus is Antioch, which last year unseated the Pirates as Bay Valley Athletic League champion.

“We really had to look at our program after that loss,” said Pittsburg incoming senior running back Montaz Thompson, who rushed for 1,766 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Campolindo archrival Miramonte-Orinda, 11-2 last season, wasn’t making any promises, either, even though it returns 14 starters, including quarterback Tim Tague, who led the region with 3,868 passing yards and 40 touchdowns.

Though De La Salle has ruled the local roost for three decades, these Spartans feel like underdogs.

De La Salle will play only one out-of-state game this season, against East of Salt Lake City, but plays arguably the Peninsula’s top squad, Serra, which features reigning West Catholic Athletic League Player of the Year, versatile quarterback Leki Nunn.

Nunn (5-foot-10, 175 pounds) threw for 1,766 yards rushed for 1,068 more and accounted for 32 touchdowns last season in 10 games.
