St. Joseph’s distance runner Cooper Teare leans to a great year
Lightning striking twice might be more likely than what Cooper Teare pulled off Saturday at Buchanan High in Clovis (Fresno County).
The St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda junior won the closest 3,200-meter race in the 98-year history of the CIF State Track and Field championships, out-leaning Cole Spencer, of Great Oak-Temecula (Riverside County) 8 minutes, 51.845 seconds to 8:51.847.
In that race, he edged Flintridge-La Cañada’s Jack Van Scoter 15:07.313 to 15:07.316, the closest race in the 29-year-history of that event.
“I mean, it’s crazy,” Teare told Erik Boal in an interview posted on dyestatcal.com.

Winning a state crown in a specific division in cross-country is one thing, Teare noted.
[...] beating an all-division field at state track carries an entirely different sense of accomplishment.
Seven runners broke nine minutes.
“It’s one thing having a single guy to battle down the stretch at cross country, but to come out on top here against all these guys is crazy,” Teare said.
California dreaming:
California-San Ramon sophomore Alyssa Brewer said her work all season in the 200 and 400 led her to the state title in the 800 in 2:06.86.
Brewer left a strong field in the final 200 to win going away.
“I just felt really good, really strong,” she told Boal.
Brewer said it really didn’t hit her that she was a state champion until 10 or 15 minutes after the race.
“This is just unbelievable,” she said.
School record:
Riordan senior Jason Smith waited for his last jump to be his best — and the best in school history.
The 6-foot-4, 180-pounder, a standout on the Crusaders’ basketball team, went 23 feet, 9¼ inches to place fourth and break the school mark of 23-9 set in the 1987 Central Coast Section finals by Reggie Jackson.
Adding Lincoln junior Pamela Amaechi (discus, 164 feet, 1 inch) and Valley Christian senior Elena Bruckner (shot put, 49-5¾) to the list of champions, there were four Metro titlists and 23 medalists (top six).
The weights trio of Amaechi, Bruckner and Amador Valley-Pleasanton senior Nathan Esparza each medaled twice.
Team results:
Vista Murrieta-Murrieta (Riverside County) senior Michael Norman had a meet to remember, contributing to four victories — the 200 (20.42), 400 (45.77) and both relays — leading his squad to the team title with 54 points.
Great Oak (40 points) finished second, thanks to a remarkable double from Isaac Cortes:
Carson, buoyed by two relay wins, won the girls title with 40 points.
Agoura was second with 28 points, all of them coming from Tara Davis, who won the 100 hurdles and triple jump, and finished second in the long jump.
