Lincoln’s Amaechi 1st S.F. female to win state track & field title
After being told she was the first San Francisco Section girl to win a state track and field championship, Lincoln junior Pamela Amaechi paused and smiled.
“That’s great, but I’m still just me, Pamela,” said Amaechi after winning the discus with a mark of 164 feet, 1 inch Saturday at Buchanan High School in Clovis.
Amaechi, whose sister Chioma placed second in the shot put in 2010, passed up national leader Elena Bruckner, of Valley Christian, on her fifth attempt at 162-8 and then surpassed that mark on her final throw.
Bruckner, the state record-holder in the shot put at 54-7, won at 49-5¾ and Amaechi was tied for second at 45-1½, but got a third-place medal because the girl she tied with had a better second mark.
Brewer took the lead with 150 meters to go, pulled away 50 meters later and crossed in a personal best of 2 minutes, 6.86 seconds, finishing more than a second ahead of runner-up Del Oro-Loomis sophomore Cathilyn McIntosh (2:07.98).
St. Joseph Notre Dame-Alameda junior Cooper Teare also was impressive, winning one of the closest 3,200 races in state history.
Teare and Great Oak’s Cole Spencer, who had been fifth with 250 meters to go, crossed the finish line in 8:51.85, A photo finish determined Teare had prevailed.
The Bellarmine 400 relay team of Troy Martig, Kyle Macauley, Devon Buenrostro and Earvin DaSilva finished third at state.
Bruckner discus (160-09), Nathan Esparza (Amador Valley) shot put (69-0¾), Kaylah Robinson (El Cerrito) 100 hurdles (13.44).
Amaechi shot put (45-1½), Bellarmine 400 relay (41.47), Kali Hatcher (St. Mary’s) triple jump (39-8¾), Noah Hurley (College Park) pole vault (15-8), Carondelet 1,600 relay (3:46.39).
