De La Salle wins NCS baseball title

The De La Salle senior was at the bottom of a 36-player dog pile Saturday at St. Mary’s College.

Castro Valley, which had knocked out the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 seeds en route to the final, struck for two runs in the top of the first on a single, two walks, a hit batsman and two wild pitches.

A two-run single by Michael Curran in the second tied it.

The Spartans took a 4-2 lead in the third on Joe Vranesh’s second double, an RBI single from Redmond and a sacrifice fly by Mason Behiel.

Castro Valley (17-10) closed to 4-3 in the fifth on an RBI single from Matt Barraza, but the Spartans added two runs in the bottom half on four more hits, including a booming RBI single off the right-field fence by Trace Tammaro.

Brian Martinez pitched a six-hitter and Kevin Key had two hits and two RBIs to lead seventh-seeded Livermore (15-13) to a 4-2 win over ninth-seeded Northgate-Walnut Creek (19-8) in the Division II final at Diablo Valley College. …

Tommy Henderson drove in two runs with a double and sacrifice fly, Daniel Kim added an RBI single and Grant Young pitched top-seeded Acalanes-Lafayette (26-2) to a 4-1 Division III title win over Analy-Sebastopol (23-7) at St. Mary’s.

Alexis Scalzo pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven, and nine Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland players had hits as the Dragons (22-4) won the Division III title with an 8-0 win over fourth-seeded San Marin-Novato (16-8) at St. Mary’s.
