S.F.’s Pamela Amaechi aiming for history at state track meet

S.F.’s Pamela Amaechi aiming for history at state track meet

A 4.33 student, compassionate team leader and conscientious in every regard, Lincoln junior Pamela Amaechi is a “once-in-a-generation kid,” said her track and field coach Kevin Doherty.

Because of Amaechi’s impressive, beyond-her-years makeup, it sometimes gets lost that she has launched the discus 166 feet, 5 inches — sixth best in the nation — or put the shot 47-1, the fourth-best mark in the state.

Pretty evolved answer, but none of it surprises Doherty, who coached Amaechi’s sister Chioma, who placed second in the shot put (47-1¾) as a senior in 2010.

Chioma, also an international weightlifting standout, finished as one of Cal’s all-time top-10 performers in the shot put and hammer.

    “Very impressive family,” Doherty said.

Pamela and her twin, Precious, are the youngest of seven children of Richard and Christina Amaechi, who immigrated from Nigeria in 1984.

Another, Jennifer, 27, just graduated from Georgetown.

Chioma now teaches fourth graders in Detroit.

Pamela’s greatest family influence comes from her late sister Uche, who died in 2012 on her 19th birthday because of liver cancer.

“I would describe her as the perfect person,” Pamela said of Uche.

    Totally selfless.

Last year at the state meet, Pamela was supposed to run on the 400-meter relay but persuaded her coach to run an alternate “to get everyone involved,” Doherty said.

Despite her powerful 5-8 frame, Pamela won the San Francisco Section high jump at 5-1 and finished third in the 100 at 12.80 seconds.

Precious finished first in 12.64, took the long jump and will join her sister in Clovis.

“We’ve always run all the events, but never against each other,” Pamela said.

Even though she’s her No. 1 competitor, Pamela said she looks forward to seeing Valley Christian’s Elena Bruckner at state.

Bruckner ranks first in the nation in the discus (186-10) and is second in the shot put (54-7).

Bruckner and teammate Ronna Stone befriended Pamela, then a freshman, at state in 2014.

“I didn’t know anyone (as a freshman at state) and (Bruckner) was one of the first people I met,” Pamela said.
