    Castro Valley baseball upsets Heritage-Brentwood

Matt Mascio, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound junior, pitched a five-hitter and added an RBI double for the Trojans (17-9), who face top-seeded De La Salle-Concord in Saturday’s noon championship game at St. Mary’s College.

Heritage, which got an RBI groundout from Chris Tryoye, scoring Jake Cosgrove in the sixth, finished 21-5.

After dropping three straight late in the season, Castro Valley wondered if it would even make it to the NCS tournament, but it picked up steam with two wins to earn a playoff spot.

Castro Valley managed two unearned runs off tough-luck loser Walker Brinkman in the third before Mascio’s RBI double in the fifth, making it 3-0.

Khalid Johnson hit a grand slam, senior shortstop and UCSB-commit Armani Smith added three hits and three RBIs, and Ryan Cole had two hits and three RBIs, leading the Spartans’ 15-hit attack.

Ninth-seeded Northgate-Walnut Creek (19-7) and seventh-seeded Livermore (15-13) won Division II semifinal games, third-seeded Analy-Sebastopol (23-6) moved into the Division III final with a 4-1 win over El Cerrito, and third-seeded Justin-Siena-Napa (15-13-1) advanced to the Division IV final with a 5-1 win over Piedmont.

The California Interscholastic Federation announced Tuesday it will adjust the start times to Friday’s track championship trials because of the anticipated warm temperatures.
