Redwood-Larkspur second-year football coach Allen Talley drives a truck for a living, which is how he sort of navigates his team.
The Giants, behind a rugged offensive line and mini tank of a fullback in Kyle Fulton (5-foot-7, 190 pounds), like to stick the offense into a low gear and power the ball straight ahead with tailback back Nick Calzaretta.
The 5-11, 198-pound senior has pounded the ball inside for 699 yards and 10 touchdowns, leading Redwood to an impressive 3-0 start.
Going after the school’s first winning season since 2008, there’s nothing fancy to Talley’s approach.
The Giants open Marin County Athletic League play at No. 20 Marin Catholic-Kentfield (1-2), which is coming off a stinging 31-28 loss at St. Ignatius.
Since 2008, Marin Catholic is 48-1 in MCAL play, and it has outscored Redwood 367-67 in seven straight wins.
Or the fact that Marin Catholic is the only private school that plays football in Marin County and often lands top players from Larkspur and surrounding cities.
The Giants lost first-team All-Metro offensive lineman Jacob Curhan (6-7, 300) to graduation — he’s now at Cal — but returned three key starting linemen — left tackle Wiley Geiger (6-1, 230), left guard Billy Lewis (5-8, 215) and center Max Hogan (6-0, 200).
Senior 6-foot, 170-pound quarterback Trevor Foehr (537 passing yards, six TDs) and senior 6-4, 208-pound wide receiver Alex Wilson (17 catches, 321 yards, five TDs) give Redwood just enough weapons to give Marin Catholic’s defense some problems.
Young but active Liberty defense will be challenged by experienced Minutemen, led by talented junior QB Nick Nunez (729 yards, eight touchdowns).
While all eyes will be on the state’s No. 2 rusher, Montaz Thompson of Pittsburg, watch out for Berkeley 6-foot, 203-pound senior RB Armani Turner-Jenkins (9.3 yards per carry).
Both teams looking to rebound following disappointing losses last week.
The Leopards are led by Utah’s leading rusher, Jaylen Warren (841 yards, 13.6 yards per carry).
In a new offering featured on SFGate.com, The Chronicle will be live streaming several high school football games each week.
