Marin Catholic rides out storm, Miramonte

The trip to Los Angeles to watch former pupil Jared Goff was made much more pleasant for Marin Catholic-Kentfield coach Mazi Moayed following Saturday’s thrilling 20-18 North Coast Section Division 3 quarterfinal win over visiting Miramonte-Orinda. Moayed, who was Goff’s guest at the 2016 NFL draft, was just happy he was healthy enough to make the flight for the Rams’ Sunday home game with Miami. Following the score, Miramonte’s Nick Foster returned the ensuing kickoff 50 yards to the Marin Catholic 27. With two seconds left and the wind at his back, a 45-yard field goal by Henry Marken missed to the left. Miramonte (9-3), behind three touchdown passes from Tim Tague, was in control most of the way and looked a lock when he connected for a 5-yard score to Ben Jungbluth with 11:29 to play to go up 18-7. [...] Petras found Peter Brown on a short screen and the 6-foot-3, 208-pound senior slipped through a couple tackles and sprinted 71 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Miramonte lead to 18-13 with 10:56 left. In NCS Division 3 quarterfinals, Jevon Holland scored on a punt return and reception, Quinn Brinnon caught a TD pass and Austin Jones ran for a score while host O’Dowd (11-1) won going away. In an NCS Division 4 quarterfinal, Willy Matsuno scored on TD runs of 2 and 5 yards in the fourth quarter as Piedmont (8-4) spoiled host Kennedy’s dream season. Following a long touchdown drive, capped by Matsuno’s 2-yard run that put Piedmont up 9-8 with 10 minutes left, a fumble recovery set up his second scoring run just two minutes later.
