Rancho Cotate coach Ed Conroy hopes to go out with title

For the first 12 of his 27 years as football coach Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park, the Cougars ran the veer and triple option before transitioning into the spread and no-huddle attack.

Jake Simmons (4,146 total yards, 47 touchdowns), Rancho Cotate is the third seed in the Division 3 playoffs.

A San Francisco native, Conroy moved with his family to Petaluma, where he attended St. Vincent and got talked into playing football by then-coach Bill Silva.

An all-around athlete, Conroy returned to San Francisco to play football for Vic Rowen at San Francisco State.

Conroy, who has 196 career wins, is a little shaky on numbers and years of his long career, but he rattled off his record in those first four seasons with rapid-fire clarity: 3-7, 0-10, 2-8 and 2-8.

Since winning back-to-back NCS 3A Redwood Empire crowns in 2001-02, Cotate has had just one losing season (5-6 in 2006).

“More than the wins and losses, I’ve tried to make it a special experience for the kids,” Conroy said.

There will be a full hiring process, but Conroy says his choice for his replacement would be offensive coordinator Gehrig Hotaling.
