Bishop O’Dowd opens playoffs with 56-14 victory

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland senior has six college scholarship offers as a defensive end, but he also plays left guard, tight end and linebacker for the Dragons, who opened North Coast Section Division III play Saturday with a 56-14 win over visiting Terra Linda-San Rafael.

Jackson was rewarded for his unselfish play with his first rushing touchdown, a 3-yarder in the final two minutes of a game the second-seeded Dragons led 42-0 in the first 15 minutes.

Coach Napoleon Kaufman, the former NFL running back, and his team openly talk about winning a state title, and Saturday’s performance indicated it’s certainly within reach.

The guys know the ultimate goal, and this is the first step in the postseason.

Terra Linda coach Rich Cotruvo, who brought up six sophomores to replace injured starters, requested a running clock by the second quarter.

The Trojans’ other score came when quarterback Matt Peters fired a backward pass to Tavion Pickett, who completed a 38-yard TD throw to Corey Swenson.

In Division I, Nick Zell threw five TD passes, including the winning 15-yarder to Aidan Quinn to complete a 99-yard drive, as host Heritage-Brentwood (8-3) won 35-32 over San Leandro (6-5) — which jumped to a 32-0 lead behind three touchdown runs by Omari Land.

In a Division III game, Thomas Jacobsen, Max Mani and Mack Roesner each had 10 tackles and host Marin Catholic-Kentfield (9-2) registered eight sacks and held De Anza-Richmond (6-5) to 85 total yards in a 34-0 win, its sixth shutout in its past seven games. ...

In Division IV, Kennedy-Richmond QB Micah Barnes (13-of-18, 122 yards) accounted for three touchdowns and Tre’vante Daniels caught a touchdown pass, returned an interception 60 yards for another score, caught a two-point conversion pass and had 12 tackles as the fourth-seeded Eagles (10-1) rolled to a 38-0 win over visiting El Molino-Forestville (5-6).

Down 14-12 midway through the second quarter, visiting SHP (3-8) used a 34-0 run that included two touchdown runs apiece from Isoa Moimoi and Tommy Barnds to win its Division V opener against top-seeded Carmel (10-1).

Darrell Page carried 19 times for 151 yards and three touchdowns and Brandon Bains added 113 yards and two scores as top-seeded St. Francis (10-1) won 56-27 over visiting Mountain View (5-6) in Division II first-round play.

Niamey Harris passed for 200 yards and three TDs and returned a fumble 70 yards for a score to lead Mission (7-4, 6-0) to a 42-36 Academic Athletic Associate win at Galileo (3-6, 2-4).
