Picking the winners for high school football playoffs

Picking the winners for high school football playoffs

The final regular-season rankings are in.

    Sleeper: 4.

    3 players to watch:

OL/DL Tuli Letuligasenoa (De La Salle), QB Seu Kuka (Pittsburg), RB Ronnie Rivers (Freedom).

Kuka’s favorite player is Marcus Mariota, and Kuka certainly gave a good impersonation in Saturday’s win over Antioch with 361 total yards and four touchdowns.

If he plays like that, Pittsburg has a shot.

    Sleeper: 7.

    3 players to watch:

WR/DB Zay Randle (Monte Vista), RB Najee Harris (Antioch), QB Clark Baker (SRV).

Will Monte Vista be motivated or deflated by not being picked to the Open division?

    Sleeper: 9.

3 players to watch: QB Jacob Westphal (Campolindo), RB Nick Calzaretta (Redwood), RB Jocquil Veazey Mt.

There are 53 losses among the 14 teams, so this is pretty wide open.

A big, physical team could give Campolindo trouble.

    Sleeper: 7.

3 players to watch: QB Jack Newman (Analy), QB Jake Simmons (Rancho Cotate), RB Darius Moses (Kennedy-Fremont).

    Comments:

Besides the Open, this is the most intriguing NCS field.

    Sleeper:

3 players to watch: QB Jordan Brookshire (Newman), RB Jullen Ison (Moreau), QB Jack Rice (St. Bernard’s).

Newman is tested and the most overwhelming favorite in any division.

Rice (3,322 total yards, 42 TDs) could carry SB to surprise title.

    Sleeper:

3 players to watch: WR Isaiah Hodgins (Berean), QB Lucas Triplett (Fort Bragg), RB-SS Marshel Martin (St. Patrick).

Berean Christian plays weekly against larger division schools.

    Sleeper: 4.

3 players to watch: RB Jordan Mims (M-A), RB-DB Tariq Bracy (Milpitas), QB Ike Ogbogu (Bellarmine).

    Sleeper: 5.

Point system fails by putting Serra on same side of bracket as St. Francis, whose only loss of season was to Padres.

    Sleeper:

3 players to watch: RB Javon Sturns (Valley Christian), LB Michael Zaragoza (Palma), FB-LB Jack Wolf (Aptos).

Aptos won its last four games by a combined score of 232-13, including 87-6 over Harbor.

    Sleeper: 5.

3 players to watch: RB Nolan Berry (Westmont), RB Rajah Ward (Homestead-Cupertino), RB Joseph Barnes (Gilroy).

Division 4 and 5 champions do not advance to the regional playoffs.

    Sleeper: 8.

    Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton (2-8).

Carmel has outscored foes 445-178 but certainly didn’t want to see perennial state power SHP in first round.
