Menlo-Atherton wins CCS Division 1 title

After a season of outracing opponents in high-scoring wins, Menlo-Atherton turned to its defense to pave the way to a Central Coast Section Open Division 1 championship.

The Bears defeated Milpitas 17-0 on Friday at Independence High in San Jose, extending the defense’s shutout streak to 10 quarters.

“We’ve got really good coaches and really talented players on the defensive side of the ball,” Menlo-Atherton coach Adhir Ravipati said.

Milpitas (10-3) used a stellar defensive effort to keep the game close into the final minutes.

Leki Nunn rushed for more than 160 yards and two touchdowns and passed for three scores, one each to Shane Villaroman, Chris Park and Isiah Kendrick, as the fifth-seeded Padres (9-4) won their fourth CCS crown and third since 2011 with the Division 2 Open win at Westmont High in San Jose.

[...] Nunn put Serra in control, capping a long drive with a 1-yard touchdown sneak and then completing a 32-yard scoring strike to Kendrick for a 30-14 lead with 6:13 left in the game.

First-half touchdown runs by Javon Sturns (2 yards) and Isaiah Rodriguez (4 yards) helped second-seeded Valley Christian (12-1) defeat top-seeded Palma (10-3) at Oak Grove High in San Jose.

The fifth-seeded Wildcats (8-5) opened the scoring, but it was all Cougars from there as four players rushed for a touchdown and the top-seeded hosts rolled to a Division 2 semifinal win.

Jacob Westphal completed 15 of 23 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown for Campolindo (9-3), which plays the winner of Saturday’s Windsor-Granada game in next week’s final.

Marin Catholic-Kentfield 40, Analy-Sebastopol 35: A 47-yard touchdown run by Matthew DeDonatis gave the fourth-seeded Wildcats (11-2) a 30-28 lead with 9:45 to play, and they didn’t trail again in a Division 3 semifinal win over the host Tigers (11-2).

Quarterback Jordon Brookshire took control early to lead the top-seeded Cardinals (11-1) to an easy Division 4 semifinal victory in Santa Rosa.

Marshel Martin rushed for 263 yards and three touchdowns and Marquel Johnson had three interceptions as the fifth-seeded Bruins (10-3) won the Division 5 semifinal over the top-seeded Eagles (8-4) at Clayton Valley High in Concord.
