Salesian falls to St. Bernard’s in NCS playoffs

“We just wanted to let people know who and what St. Bernard’s football is all about,” said senior quarterback and safety Jack Rice.

Rice accounted for six touchdowns — four running and two passing — by the middle of the third quarter when the Crusaders (12-1) had the game well in hand.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder had touchdown runs of 41 and 2 yards and a 38-yard TD strike to Micha Fontenot-Cornely while leading St. Bernard’s to a 27-0 lead in the first six minutes.

Rice, who has football scholarship offers from Sacramento State and the Air Force, had accounted for more than 3,900 yards total offense and 50 touchdowns this season coming into the game.

The Crusaders are an aggressive, unrelenting squad that onside kicks after every touchdown.

Salesian (9-4), which regularly plays 12 sophomores, didn’t give in and eventually closed to 42-27 late in the first half thanks to an 95-yard kickoff return and 48-yard TD reception by Ke’Mare Wright.

Quarterback Jaylen Tregle also had two short first-half touchdown runs.
