Jayden Forston’s floater bounded high off the rim and 6-foot-2 Niamey Harris leaped high to send the ball straight down.
Considered one of the greatest all-around athletes in the history of the San Francisco Section, Harris scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the final quarter as the fourth-seeded Bears (33-1) moved into the final Saturday at Vanden-Fairfield.
The dunk came with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter to give Mission a 50-44 lead, and it sent the jam-packed crowd — half clad in Mission brown and gold and half in St. Ignatius blue and red — into a frenzy.
The Bears had raced to a 9-0 lead, but behind a 17-point half from Darrion Trammell, St. Ignatius (23-7) fought back to take a 33-29 lead at the break.
The Bears did it on the defensive end, allowing just six points in the third to take a 43-39 lead into the fourth.
Mission is attempting to be the first San Francisco public school team to win a state title.
Beating a squad from the West Catholic Athletic League at this stage was special.
