    Bay Area throwers spin dreams come true at state meet

    After similar late clutch efforts Saturday at Buchanan High in Clovis (Fresno County), each can be called something else: 2017 state champion.

    Amaechi (shot put) and Joyner (discus) became the first Bay Area female and male to win throwing events at the same state meet.

    “This is all so fantastic,” said Amaechi, who was holding her medal and the name placard given to field-event winners as the meet-ending fireworks show exploded above her.

    Joyner was seeded sixth in the discus heading into the meet and was eighth after Friday’s trials, but on his second-to-last effort Saturday he passed everyone with a throw of 203-8 — his first of more than 200 feet — to edge Oak Park senior Robbie Otai (202).

    Joyner, who later placed fifth in the shot put at 59-9, became the 17th Metro discus champion, the first since 2003 and only the second Pittsburg male to win the event.

    Junior Jett Charvet (800 meters, 1:51.07) is the first Heritage-Brentwood athlete to win a state title in any sport and the first Bay Area boys champ in that event since Mission San Jose’s Jon Stevens in 1998. …
