Cardinal Newman worn down by St. Mary’s-Stockton

Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa hung tough with the Sac-Joaquin Section’s top-ranked team, but St. Mary’s-Stockton was able to outlast the host Cardinals 48-34 in nonleague action Friday night.

St. Mary’s (2-0) bolted to a 13-0 lead on the first five plays of the game with Rams quarterback Marcus Aponte running for both scores. Cardinal Newman (1-1) later took a 20-13 lead on a blocked punt by Dino Kahaulelio. Tanner Mendoza recovered the ball in the end zone for the score.

Jamar Marshall of St. Mary’s returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a tying score. The Rams eventually reeled off 28 unanswered points.
