First-year Sacred Heart Cathedral football coach Barry McLaughlin received an email from the West Catholic Athletic League office Monday, with a list of scores, schedules and standings.
The Irish were at the top of the standings — the only unbeaten squad —at 3-0.
“Frankly, I just sort of chuckled,” said McLaughlin, a longtime SHC assistant with previous stops at Riordan, CCSF and Utah State.
Not bad for a “trash-can squad.”
McLaughlin hung that label on his team of fewer than 30 players because his team is filled with unheralded players. The Irish were a combined 10-40 over the previous five seasons, including 2-33 in WCAL play.
