DJ Calhoun grows into major role as Arizona State linebacker

As only the seventh Arizona State football player to start a season opener as a true freshman, DJ Calhoun made a great impression when he arrived in Tempe.

This season, the 2014 El Cerrito graduate is putting the finishing touches on a college career that ASU fans won’t soon forget.

Calhoun, a 6-foot, 234-pound senior, is second on the team with 61 tackles, 6½ of those for losses. He enters Saturday’s Pac-12 Conference home game against No. 11 USC with 199 career tackles, 32½ for loss, 15 sacks and four pass deflections.

This season, Calhoun — who returned an onside kickoff for a touchdown last year in a 51-41 home win over Cal — is fourth in the Pac-12 in tackles per game (8.7).
