Serra High School football coach Patrick Walsh stood at midfield at St. Francis on Friday night, waiting for each one of his players to come back from the handshake line after the Padres beat the Lancers 31-21. As each player came to Walsh, the coach hugged him.
“I love you guys,” Walsh said to one. “Good job,” he said to the next.
The Padres (8-2, 7-0) had just wrapped up their first West Catholic Athletic League outright title since 1969.
It was an achievement Walsh had downplayed earlier in the week.
“I just didn’t want to get lost in that,” he said. “I didn’t want to get caught up in ghosts.”
He sang a different tune on Friday.
