High school football: Postseason whittling begins

The seasons for five of the top 25 teams ended over the weekend, but all remained in the rankings after losing to other ranked teams.

Previous 5th- and 6th-ranked San Ramon Valley-Danville and Clayton Valley-Concord lost in the North Coast Section Open Division to Nos. 1 and 3 De La Salle-Concord and Pittsburg, respectively, so they dropped simply to 7 and 8. No. 17 Acalanes-Lafayette lost 35-21 at No. 13 Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland, No. 18 Foothill-Pleasanton lost to No. 25 San Leandro in a back-and-forth affair, and No. 20 Encinal-Alameda lost to No. 14 Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa in Santa Rosa.

This weekend figures to be one of the season’s best, highlighted by games pitting No. 5 Valley Christian at No.
