San Francisco
Yarvell Smith (Galileo)
The rugged 5-foot-10, 205-pound running back and linebacker is one of the few sophomores ever named Academic Athletic Association Player of the Year, leading the Lions (11-2) in a season filled with championships.
Smith averaged 9.2 yards per carry while rushing for 1,420 yards and 19 touchdowns. His 10 receptions averaged 24.3 yards and he collected 72 tackles in limited defensive duties. He played on that side of the ball only when Galileo needed him most.
The Lions won their 18th San Francisco Section and the section’s first regional and state titles, taking Division 6-A crowns in each.
