Suburban high school basketball taking center stage

Fans of top-end boys basketball don’t necessarily need to travel to private-school gyms or the inner city these days.

Suburban public-school basketball around the Bay Area has never been better.

Five of The Chronicle’s top-10 teams reside in pockets of the region not regularly recognized as hoop hotbeds: Brentwood, Concord, Dublin, Palo Alto and Walnut Creek.

    Yet No. 5 Palo Alto, No. 6 Las Lomas-Walnut Creek, No. 7 Dublin, No. 8 Clayton Valley-Concord and No. 10 Heritage-Brentwood enter Friday’s play a combined 74-8.

One of the year’s most anticipated regular-season games features Las Lomas (15-1) at Clayton Valley (17-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.
