The way Keith Larsen tells it, the stars have aligned and his Menlo School-Atherton boys basketball team is a once-in-a-generation occurrence.
At 16-1, the Knights are ranked fourth in the Metro area.
“You get lucky once every 20 years or so,” he said.
It has been nearly 30 years since Menlo, an acclaimed school of 550 students, won a state title, topping Division 2 in 1983 and D5 in 1989. Larsen, a Serra grad, was a young coach at Mills-Millbrae and Woodside during that heyday.
Part of the late Bud Presley’s coaching tree, Larsen was a Stanford assistant (1992-1998), then head coach at Menlo College and Cal State Stanislaus.
