PITTSBURG — After blowing a 14-point first-half lead against visiting Serra, fifth-ranked Pittsburg had to do something it hadn’t done in any of its first three games this season.
The Pirates had to score in the second half.
Not a problem. Pittsburg scored 24 points in the third quarter to break things open and then hung on for a 45-35 nonleague win over the sixth-ranked Padres.
“We haven’t had a big third quarter in a long time,” Pittsburg coach Victor Galli said. “That’s a heck of a football team over there. They were fired up and had momentum going into halftime. We tried to light a fire under these guys at halftime, and they responded.
