Defense propels Menlo-Atherton past Palo Alto, into CCS Div. 1 title game

Menlo-Atherton’s highly touted defense stifled Palo Alto’s highly touted offense in a 17-7 win in a Central Coast Section Division 1 semifinal Saturday in Atherton.
The Bears (10-2) limited the Vikings (10-2) to 180 yards, only 5 yards rushing, and advanced to next weekend’s championship against top-seeded Wilcox-Santa Clara.
Palo Alto’s Jackson Chryst, who entered with more than 2,500 yards passing and 33 touchdowns, completed 18 of 36 passes for 175 yards with two interceptions. Menlo-Atherton sacked Chryst three times.
Menlo-Atherton’s Deston Hawkins rushed 16 times for 111 yards. He carried on all seven plays of a fourth-quarter drive that culminated with his clinching 1-yard TD run.
