It obviously doesn't mean as much as the football we love to watch from August - December but don't discount the value it does have for the athletes competing:
Cover skills, agility and just the sheer competition of covering a man and saying "You are NOT going to beat me on this route" or a receiver thinking "I knew this guy couldn't cover me". My son started on Varsity in 2014 as a sophomore and he gained a lot of maturity participating 7-on-7. Go out and take in a tournament and just sit back and watch how all the players love to compete. -

I think the only benefit is that competition is always good. In terms of timing etc, so there are so many tricked up or 7 on 7 only plays that would never transfer to the 11 man game. More competition and practice is always good especially against other kids. All spring and summer you are playing against your own teammates so much it is good to play against another opponent.Comment

We played Allen to double OT in the game right before you. Lost on a dropped TD on 4th down from the 2 yard line. Argh!
Manvel players came over to our side and watched. I got to visit with some of them. Good young men.Comment

Honestly, can't remember. I don't think there was anything too bad - they just made 1 more play than we did. We obvioulsy took it out of each other because I don't believe they were then ready for you guys at all. Looking forward to another HOT summer of 7-on-7. We'll see you guys in College Station.Comment

Mesquite SQTWhen it comes to 7 on 7 the Mesquite Horn Jaguars have simply had the number of the DeSoto Eagles. Three of the past four years these two DFW area powers have met in the semi-finals of this qualifier and each time Mesquite Horn has come out victorious. Saturday was no different at Hanby Stadium as the Jags offense powered by QB Chris Robison and WR Bryston Cummings among others rolled past DeSoto 51-38 to clinch one of two spots at the 7 on 7 State Tournament in College Station July 10-11. After DeSoto took a quick 7-0 on a TD pass from Tristen Wallace to K.D. Nixon Horn rattled off 19 straight points to take control of the game and never look back. DeSoto climbed within seven points late at 45-38, but the Eagles were unable to get another stop to give their offense one more shot.
The other semi-final lacked drama as Cedar Hill used an early first half blitz to drill Dallas Skyline 41-19, the win gives Cedar Hill their third straight trip to the State Tournament. QB Avery Davis was on fire most of the day, using a number of talented receivers to chew up chunks of yards, but Cedar Hill's defense led by DB's Michael Clark Jameel Moore Eric Sutton and LB Kolbi McGary completely stymied the Skyline offense.
Due to the intense rains in the area, Sulphur Springs withdrew from the tournament leaving a hole in Pool A. Cedar Hill got a major test from a game Forney squad, the Longhorns fell behind 28-14 in the first half but rallied back for a 41-34 win as the defense held Forney to just six second half points. Skyline won a very competitive Pool B, the Raiders won their three games by a total 20 points.
DeSoto and Mesquite played the game of the day in Pool C, the Eagles trailed 34-25 early in the second half but rallied back late to win 51-47 as the Eagles scored with under a minute left to win the game. Mesquite is a very good 7 on 7 team and could be a contender in other qualifiers. Mesquite Horn and Plano were clearly the top two teams in Pool D today, both swept through their first two games with ease and met up in the final round of pool play. Horn held off a tough Plano squad 32-26 to advance to the semi-finals.

By JAMES LACOMBE
HOUSTON - In another sign that La Marque athletics has overcome the turmoil of the spring semester to continue its typical high level of performance, the Cougars football team showed they will still be one of the area’s top small-school programs to contend with as they qualified for the state 7on7 championships.
“It’s been a really hard semester for all of us, and I’m just really proud of our kids for the way they competed and the way they represented the town,” La Marque head football coach Mike Jackson said.
At the Houston Amateur Sports Park on Saturday, La Marque emerged from the 16-team state qualifier tournament as one of the top two squads, earning a trip to the state championships on July 9-10 at the Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.
“It’s a nice reward for the kids coming up,” Jackson said. “It’s always kind of fun because it’s an overnight trip and kids get to go up there and compete against the best in the state.”
Saturday’s state qualifier was a 16-team tournament that began with pool play to set up semifinal and final games.
During Saturday’s qualifier, La Marque defeated Anahuac 31-26, Westbury Christian 38-20, East Bernard 27-7 and Houston Furr 41-20.
“You play all these teams back-to-back, so you have to have the endurance to hang in,” Jackson said. “It takes a lot of mental toughness to hang in there, and they competed.
“This is my fifth summer at La Marque that I’ve had kids going to this, and they were about as mentally composed today and competed about as well as any of them I’ve ever had,” Jackson added.
The Cougars will be competing in the state 7on7 tournament’s Division II, which is made up of teams at La Marque’s classification (4A) and smaller. Division I features teams from Classes 6A and 5A.
La Marque was one of 14 Division II teams across the state to qualify for state just this weekend, joining 12 other teams that have already qualified.
There are 19 more state qualifiers scheduled for Division II, meaning 38 more teams can still join the pack for a total of 64 participants at the state championship tournament.
The 7on7 football team joins the boys basketball team and 100-meter sprinter Alan Cooper as the latest to represent La Marque at a state championship this spring, which was marred by about two months of outside uncertainty.
In February, the Texas Education Agency revoked the school district’s accreditation, threatening to shut it down at year’s end before granting La Marque ISD a reprieve in April.
“They were able to block out everything and still compete,” Jackson said. “We’re proud of them.”Comment
