No mention of three-peat at Cedar Hill practice, a new toy and depth at WR
Joey McGuire did not mention a run at a third consecutive state title in his address to the team before Monday’s opening practice. His policy is to look no further than the opener on his District 8-6A schedule.
In his final words to the squad before hitting the field Monday, McGuire talked about handling the grind of a season, the importance of accepting correction from coaches and the best way to be a great teammate — sweat more.“You can’t get to the playoffs if you don’t get out of district,’’ said the three-time state champion coach at Cedar Hill (2006, 2013-14). “Even in our non-district games, our No. 1 goal is to get better for district.’’
Longhorns use eye in the sky
Hovering 20 feet in the air during a passing drill in the final stages of Monday’s opening Cedar Hill practice was its newest teaching tool — a camera-carrying drone. With the regular operator unavailable, quarterback coach John Tomlinson was at the controls.
“I teach a lot off film and the look this gives helps verify what I’m seeing,’’ said Tomlinson.
Tomlinson said he recognized the value of a drone in a visit to an SMU practice. He said Cedar Hill’s drone, that he has nicknamed Maggie, costs from $400 to $600.
Depth at WR a strength for ‘Horns
The pace of Cedar Hill’s two-hour practice Monday morning was a bit of a wake-up call for a handful of newcomers.
For veterans like receiver Josh Stewart, the high intensity with little down time is “part of our tradition when we come through the gates.’’
Head coach Joey McGuire said this year’s team could possess its deepest pool of wide receivers.
“Considering the receivers we’ve had,’’ said Stewart, “that means a lot.’’
“Any of our receivers can score on any play,’’ said junior Avery Davis, the heir-apparent at quarterback and a star in the 2014 state title victory over Katy.
