I'm on Central's bandwagon. Have been ever since coach Davis left Alice for SA. Good luck.

Thanks you too. Davis has done an amazing job. We're fortunate to have him.

          Here's a bit of a team preview:

San Angelo Central had their annual Meet the Bobcats Saturday night that concluded with an intrasquad scrimmage. I was fortunate enough to attend. Here are some thoughts on that and some info on the team.

Defense- It's good. Several large DTs, and the starters, Cedrick Smith and Jordan Schellhase are juniors that add up to about 600 pounds and started as sophomores. DE Parsee was 1st team all-district last season and committed to Stephen F. Austin. Junior LB Gehrig Scott is heading into his third year of starting, and the secondary is led by 1st team all-district corner Will Vincent.

Offense- It should be good but the defense is better, although the offense closed the gap since the spring game. The OL is big as well, with several who look to be in the 300 pound range and is led by SMU commit LT Braxton Webb. TCU commit Brennen Wooten leads the attack at QB and has some big receivers to work with, such as 6'6" junior Adam West and 6'3" senior Will Grindstaff. There's also Brennen's little brother Aaron Wooten, who as a junior is already acquiring FBS scholarship offers. Senior Khalil Antoine and junior Daven Manning (transfer from Marble Falls) should allow for a better rushing attack than last season. Manning was impressive in the scrimmage.

The addition of Manning allows Michael Brown, Jr. to play slot. He was also impressive in the scrimmage and bring RAC and speed. He and Manning are both speed guys who can take it to the house.

Only four of the ten games at home this season.

          HC Brent Davis

          * I have no inside info and am making educated guesses on some of the following. My apologies for anything I get wrong.

I'm including just a few highlights and video clips below.

Should be a pretty good team, now it's just a matter if they can hold off all comers in district with Abilene and Permian both fielding strong teams, and see if they can get past that 3rd round DFW hump. If one of 3-6a's teams can do that they can make a run.

                  8/21 scrimmage at Abilene Cooper:

Bobcats controlled play and the only bad thing was allowing a few long plays for TDs. D didn't allow them to move the ball otherwise and the Bobcat offense scored every time.

QB Wooten was 38-48 471 yds 6 TDs

RB Manning was impressive and here's his highlights from the scrimmage:

CENTRAL MIDWEEK: Bobcats hope to duplicate, better 2014 win vs. Del Rio

                    Teams tangle in opener again

                    By Quinton Martinez

The Central High School football team will open the football season against Del Rio on Friday with one eye on the past and another toward the future.

There are some things about last year’s 36-0 season-opening win over the Rams the Bobcats would love to replicate this week, but there are other things that Central hopes to avoid.

The team held Del Rio to minus-34 yards rushing and forced five turnovers, all while posting its first shutout since 2011.
“Our defense played lights out in that game,” said Central head coach Brent Davis. “Lane Ward had three interceptions — one returned for a touchdown. We played really good on defense in that game.”

Offensively, the Bobcats hope to have a much smoother entry to the season than they experienced in 2014.
Braden Hucks led the team to 22 first-quarter points, but the offense only scored once the rest of the game, and the senior — making his first start at quarterback — tossed three interceptions.

Davis and offensive coordinator Kevin Crane are hoping to avoid the same offensive lull in the 2015 opener.

“We started off on fire and we went through a lull and never really came out of it,” Davis said. “We were re-examining that game this weekend. We threw a pick inside the 20 twice. Those would’ve been touchdowns if we don’t do that.

“Hopefully we got a little bit of that first-game stuff out of the way (in the scrimmage) against Cooper and we can shine a little bit more in this first game.”

If last week’s scrimmage is any indication, the offense appears ready for the regular season.

Brennen Wooten helped the Central offense complete 53 of 76 passes for 644 yards and six touchdowns. The Bobcats added 191 yards on the ground and scored 10 times.

Crane said that Wooten, who has two years of starting experience at Marble Falls, spread the ball around and that Central’s entire receiving corps had a good day.

“They are still getting better and they still have a long way to go,” Crane said. “Each of those guys had a few catches, which was a good thing. We spread the ball around and gave those guys opportunities and had a chance to see what they could do when they caught the ball.”

Both Crane and Davis were pleased with running backs Khalil Antoine and Daven Manning against the Cougars.

Manning, a junior who also came to Central from Marble Falls, gives the Bobcats a 1-2 punch in the backfield to aid the passing attack.

The Bobcats’ seventh-year offensive coordinator said the team is trying to avoid the uneven play from last year’s opener, but credited Del Rio for some of the struggles.

The Rams allowed just over 20 points per game in 2014, advancing to the area playoffs after an upset win over McAllen Memorial.

Central’s 36-point outburst against Del Rio was the second-most points the Rams allowed in any game all season.
The Bobcats are preparing for anything after Del Rio changed defensive fronts from the scrimmage to Week 1 last year and also altered their offensive scheme.

Even with the changes, defensive coordinator Mark Chester said the Bobcats’ experience allowed them to adapt and succeed last season.

“Last year they showed us an entirely different offense than we had seen on film,” Chester said. “Our kids adapted well. They were throwing the ball a lot. They had shown us that they were going to run a lot (in the scrimmage). This year they are right around 50-50 (pass-run).”

                    Bobcat bites

Central is looking to win the season opener for the third straight season. Under Davis, the Bobcats are 4-2 in season debuts.

The Bobcats are 7-0 all time against Del Rio.

Central debuted at No. 2 in Class 6A in the new Lone Star Varsity West Texas high school football poll. The poll is comprised of schools in the Panhandle, West Texas and Big Country and voted on by media members in the region.
District 3-6A’s Odessa Permian was chosen No. 1.

Bobcats hope to start season with positive momentum

                          By: Quinton Martinez

The Central Bobcats had questions going into the spring, questions going into summer and questions at the start of fall camp.

On Friday against Del Rio, they’ll get their first chance to see if they’ve answered the questions that had lingered.

Four new starting offensive linemen will take the field in front of new quarterback Brennen Wooten, who will throw to three new starting receivers.

While a scrimmage cannot be judged the same as a regular-season football game, early returns seem positive for the Central offense and its new line.

Left tackle Braxton Webb, an SMU commit, is the lone holdover but the coaching staff felt that center Cameron Cross and right tackle Rodrick Mayberry had also cemented starting roles for the Bobcats going into the fall.

The position battles have been at guard, and head coach Brent Davis said that four players will see action in the opener — Blake Furman, Desmond Salamanca, Dillon Evans and Jonathon Uresti.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Crane said the staff was surprised with the depth that has developed at O-line.

“We knew what Braxton could do, but Rodrick played really good in the scrimmage and stuck out on film. Our center Cameron is a good football player, too.

“I think we have more depth there than we anticipated. We might rotate some guys in at guard early on and then evaluate some film.”

The depth along both lines will be tested early as the team gets into game shape over the course of the first several weeks.

The new offensive front enabled the Bobcats to accumulate over 800 yards against Abilene Cooper in last week’s scrimmage along with 10 touchdowns.

That will be tested by a Del Rio defense that held Eagle Pass Winn scoreless last week in its second scrimmage and held opponents to just over 20 points per game last year.

The leader of the Rams’ defense is linebacker Marcus Braswell, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker that jumps off game film.

“(Braswell) dominated in the scrimmage,” Crane said. “He defeated blocks and made a lot of plays at or behind the line of scrimmage. We have to know where he is at on the field. Their secondary didn’t get tested a lot during the scrimmage, but they are capable.”

Davis called Del Rio’s senior linebacker “the real deal” and said the Rams have good size along the defensive front.

On defense Central will feature a new starter at defensive end, a pair of new safeties and a new cornerback molding in with eight returnees on what is expected to be a stout unit.

The one position battle that will spill into the season is at cornerback between Ty Harmon and Michael Guzman.
Davis said both showed positives and negatives in last week’s scrimmage.

Henry Howard, a junior moving into the starting lineup, had two interceptions and stood out for the Central defense.
Though the Bobcats gave up several long touchdowns to the Cougars and “didn’t tackle well,” Davis expects a big improvement this week.

“The scrimmage pointed out a lot of weaknesses,” junior linebacker Gehrig Scott said. “It showed us that we have areas that need improvement, but we are pleased that we have an offense that has our backs even if we give up some points.

“It was the first week and we hadn’t tackled live. We are still getting back into the groove of things. Missed tackles led to one big play, and that is what we have worked on this week.”

Davis said getting the season off on a positive note is a must.

“Everybody wants to win the first game so you can start the year right and get one under your belt,” Davis said. “You never start to worry, ‘When are we going to win one?’ You want to get one under your belt, because that stuff can snowball. It is crucial to us and crucial to Del Rio.”

Solid opener for the Bobcats. They started slow offensively but got it going. Del Rio reminds me of Odessa in that they are physical and play hard. They don't give you anything easy. Bobcat defense played well.

DEL RIO — Somewhere along the way to a low-scoring defensive slugfest to open the season, Central rewrote the script.

The Bobcats turned a ho-hum 14-0 halftime lead into a 42-0 walloping Friday at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium to christen the 2015 campaign with a win.

Central was sparked by an interception by Brock Martin to halt Del Rio’s first offensive possession of the second half, and from that point the Bobcat defense took control.

Brennen Wooten hit Cal Vincent in stride for a 31-yard touchdown with 6:58 to play, and the Central defense forced three consecutive three-and-outs by the Del Rio offense.

Wooten hit Tommy Aych from the 3 to extend Central’s lead to 28-0, and the Bobcat offense never scored again.

                            But it didn’t need to.

Martin grabbed a Del Rio punt with 1:31 left in the third, initially veered right and then darted left, selecting his blocks before turning on the afterburners.

He dove for the pylon, scoring on the return from 42 yards out.

“We just do what we are coached to do and things like that happen,” Martin said. “When we all put in the effort we’re good.
“I wanted to go right, and thank goodness Will Vincent said left. I followed him and he led me home.”

Del Rio fought back, despite facing a 35-0 deficit, marching all the way to the Central 1 in 12 plays.

On the 13th play, the Bobcats stamped the exclamation point on the shutout win.

Facing fourth and goal from the 6 after a false start penalty, Del Rio quarterback Steven Salinas dropped back and thought he had his tight end breaking open in the end zone. Instead, Donavyn Jackson stepped in front of the pass and picked it at the goal line.

After weaving his way through the Rams’ offensive line, he picked up one key block at the 35 and saw daylight, marching 100 yards for the longest interception return in school history.

“We came together as a defense tonight,” Jackson said. “I saw the tight end come up and I figured no one was going to cover him. I just took it and got an interception and happened to take it back. It felt good.”

It punctuated a stellar night for the Central defense, notching a shutout over Del Rio for the second straight year.

The Rams were all but shut down on the ground — amassing just 41 yards on 31 carries — and had more incomplete passes than those that found the mark (23 of 48 for 252 with two interceptions).

“That was a huge play by Donavyn and took off for 100 yards,” Central head coach Brent Davis said. “It is hard to get shutouts against today’s offenses. To start off with one again this year … I think we played a lot better tonight than we did last year.”
The Central offense was not a well-oiled machine on offense, but the way the defense was playing, the unit didn’t have to be perfect.

“It is just going to take us a little bit at game-speed timing,” Davis said. “We are all brand new out here. We have to get better each game. The timing will come. You started to see it improve there a little bit in the second quarter and in the second half.”

Both Central and Del Rio did a good job of wearing out the midfield logo, consistently marching between the 30s, but neither offense clicked long enough to put together an early drive, leaving the game scoreless after one.

Then Daven Manning ignited the offense.

Manning picked up 33 yards on consecutive runs on Central’s first drive of the second quarter.

When the Rams keyed on Manning in the backfield, Wooten hurt them in the air, connecting with Donovan Moore for a 23-yard TD.

Central’s other first-half score came on fourth down when Wooten led 6-foot-6 Adam West perfectly on a 36 yard TD strike.

In his first outing as a Central Bobcat, Wooten connected on 24 of 40 passes for four touchdowns and no interceptions, totaling 316 yards.

Manning eclipsed the century mark by halftime in his first game at Central and finished with 115 yards rushing on nine carries.

Four receivers had at least 46 yards receiving (Cal Vincent, Dedrick Howard, Aaron Wooten and West), with Cal Vincent (8-93) and Howard (6-89) nearing the century mark.

Davis was pleased with both Manning and Khalil Antoine in the backfield and said the key is to continue to improve off of the season-opening win.

“Both of our running backs are going to make us a lot better,” Davis said. “We have to continue to get better from here. If the defense will play like this and we get better on offense, we are going to be pretty tough.”

CENTRAL MIDWEEK: Bobcats turning the tide against DFW teams

                                CHS to host Byron Nelson

                                By Quinton Martinez

If you look back 365 days ago, the Central football program was preparing for a contest with Byron Nelson at AT&T Stadium.

Those Bobcats hadn’t beaten a team from the Dallas-Fort Worth Dallas-Fort Worth area in 23 years — since the 1991 state semifinal run.

Fast forward to today and Central heads into Friday’s showdown with the same Byron Nelson squad — but more accomplished as a program.

The 2014 Bobcats not only beat Byron Nelson (35-28) in nondistrict play, but then rallied to upend Arlington Bowie (55-52) in double overtime in the bi-district playoffs.

Central’s season came to a close with a 35-10 regional semifinal loss against D/FW powerhouse Southlake Carroll, but head coach Brent Davis feels his program is close to completely getting over the hump against those programs.

“That is why we play them. We want to get to that point where we are competitive and are completely over the hump. We took a big step last year and we need to keep that thing going,” Davis said.

Central had been 0-6 in games against D/FW teams since beating Arlington Sam Houston 33-28 in the playoffs in 1991.

Defensive coordinator Mark Chester believes the team’s success against the Dallas-Fort Worth area last year makes it easier to plan for another quality opponent, instead of thinking about where they are from.

“We know what to expect and what we are going to be up against,” Chester said. “We have been here before and have had success. That is a thing of the past now. It is just preparing and executing.”

Central’s defensive execution was about as good as it could have hoped for in the Bobcats’ 42-0 Week 1 whitewashing of Del Rio.

The Bobcats yielded some passing yardage against the Rams, but bowed up every time they needed to — including a fourth-down stop at the goal line that saw Donavyn Jackson intercept Del Rio quarterback Steven Salinas and race 101 yards for a touchdown.

Central was disappointed with its tackling in its scrimmage with Abilene Cooper, but none of those issues surfaced last week.

“We improved from our scrimmage to Week 1,” Chester said. “We had a great week of practice and we emphasized effort and fundamentals and it showed Friday night.

“Our defensive line had a great game — Dylan Parsee (defensive end) led us with 10 tackles and (defensive tackle) Jordan Schellhase was one of our guys with seven tackles. We really wore them out.”

Most of Central’s offense was making its varsity debut for the Bobcats, and several had standout performances.

Quarterback Brennen Wooten threw for 316 yards and four TDs on 24 of 40 passing. Junior running back Daven Manning ran nine times for 112 yards and was a spark plug for the offense which stalled on its first three drives, turned the ball over and then had to punt again.

Slot receiver Cal Vincent led the team with eight receptions for 93 yards and a TD. Wide receiver Dedrick Howard, who was pressed into more game action with Will Grindstaff sidelined by injury, caught six passes for 89 yards.

“The more he plays and more confidence he gets, he will end up being a great player for us,” Davis said of Howard. “(Daven) sparked us a little bit. We have two good running backs and we need to keep them both healthy and fresh. We want to be fresh in the fourth quarter.

“A lot of our games from here on out are going to be fourth-quarter games. All of our district games will be and we feel like this Friday night will be.”

                                Bobcat bites

Jackson’s 101-yard interception return for a TD was not only the longest in school history (surpassing Billie Johnston’s 95-yard TD in 1937 vs. Eastland), but it was also recognized as a top play from Week 1 on Hudl, an online game film video service.

Central’s 42-0 opening win over Del Rio was the first time that the program had scored that many points while also shutting out an opponent since a 54-0 pasting of Abilene High in 1992.

Byron Nelson — which has only been open since 2009 — has never traveled as far as it will Friday (266 miles) for a football game. The previous farthest distance the program had traveled was 113 miles when it was in a district with Wichita Falls and Wichita Falls Rider.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: 'Cats hoping to continue magic at home

Central on win streak at SA Stadium

                                    By Quinton Martinez

The Central Bobcats will step out onto the San Angelo Stadium turf for a game Friday for the first time since last November.

In that bi-district contest, Central faced a 21-point deficit on three separate occasions only to rally back for a miraculous 55-52 win over Arlington Bowie.

It was Central’s second win over a Dallas-Fort Worth area team of the season.

The Angry Orange hope to harness the same home magic again in this week’s home opener against Byron Nelson — the first Dallas/Fort Worth team that they beat in 2014.

The comeback against Byron Nelson wasn’t quite as dramatic as it was against Bowie, but Central did erase a 14-point halftime hole to rally for a 35-28 win at AT&T Stadium.

“(Part of it) was nerves and the excitement of being in Cowboys Stadium,” said Central head coach Brent Davis of last year’s contest. “Defensively they hit us with some big pass plays. Our rookie corner Will Vincent grew up in a hurry. In the first half they took advantage of it and in the second half he broke up everything they threw at him.

“It was good for him and for our program. That is why you want to play good football teams — you get better.”

Now Vincent is entrenched as Central’s best corner and will be tasked with helping his team maintain the home-field advantage it has enjoyed for more than three years.

In total, Central has come away with 11 straight home wins, dating back to a Nov. 2, 2012, home loss to Abilene Cooper (21-17).

Davis called Byron Nelson one of the most talented teams that Central will see all year, including defensive end Brandon Bowen (6-foot-6, 230 pounds) and offensive lineman Kellen Diesch (6-7, 265).

Bowen is one of the most sought-after recruits from Texas in Class 6A, and Diesch has already committed to Arkansas.

“That defensive end is the real deal,” Davis said. “We had to game plan a bit for him. They are good. Having a year of playing 6A football, they learned a lot. Last year they had a few kids going both ways and you don’t see that. I think they learned that is pretty tough to do at this level. All of that is good until you get to the fourth quarter.”

Central will counter with two of their best in the same positions — defensive end Dylan Parsee (Stephen F. Austin commit) and left tackle Braxton Webb (SMU commit).

The skill at rush end and tackle for both teams will be one of the battles to watch Friday.

Webb was pleased with the play of a mostly-new offensive line against Del Rio last week in a 42-0 win, but he knows that this week will present a bigger challenge.

“It was good for the first week, but for Byron Nelson we have to play a lot better and more aggressive in order to beat them,” Webb said. “We’ve seen the film. The biggest challenge against (Bowen) is his speed rush. We’ve been working on that this week in practice and feel pretty good.”

Parsee had 10 tackles to share the team lead with linebacker Donavyn Jackson after the first week, joining a defensive line that wreaked havoc against Del Rio.

Central held the Rams to 41 yards on the ground and yielded 252 passing yards to Del Rio. The Angry Orange will be tasked with stopping a Byron Nelson team led by returning quarterback Preston Haire.

“Last year, we were our own worst enemy in the first half,” Central defensive coordinator Mark Chester said. “We committed personal foul penalties to keep their drives going on third down three times.

“They have a really good quarterback that is a really accurate thrower. He has tremendous receivers led by Pascal Mondombo, who is really fast.”

Central’s offense scored 28 points last week and despite getting off to a slow start, still finished with over 300 yards and four touchdowns passing.

Senior quarterback Brennen Wooten said there is a greater focus on starting fast on offense this week.

“In the first half, I wasn’t too sharp,” Wooten said. “I should’ve gotten going faster. We didn’t score quick enough, and we had some drives stall out. That is going to be a big emphasis this week. We need to score on our first drive. We need to do that for our defense. They played a heck of a game. We need to reward them.”

“(Byron Nelson) is a heck of a team. On film you can see they have several D-I guys. They present some issues, so we will have to really prepare this week.”

Big interception seals win for Central

                                        By Quinton Martinez

On a night when 12 touchdowns were scored, the game still came down to the foot of a kicker.

Central’s Marc Cabrera was true on a 19-yard try with 5:18 to play, and junior safety Brock Martin sealed the contest with a key late interception at the 5 to enable the Bobcats to steal a 43-42 win over Byron Nelson on Friday.

Byron Nelson had driven within field-goal range for senior kicker Mason Shank, but had third-and-9 at the Central 21 with just over three minutes left.

“I read a post route and I cut under it, thank goodness, or he would’ve been gone,” Martin said. “We rep what they run over and over again in practice. After seeing it for so long, you get used to what they are running. I saw it and I went for it.”

The pick — Martin’s second in as many games — gave the Angry Orange the ball back at the 5, and Khalil Antoine busted a 40-yard run on third-and-1 from the 12 to allow Central to run out the clock and hold serve at home for the 12th straight game.

Byron Nelson used its passing game and the speed of receiver Pascal Mondombo to seize control of the game in the second and third quarters, opening up a 42-27 advantage.

But Central kept picking away at the lead.

Antoine cashed in a drive from 1 yard out and Cal Vincent hauled in his second receiving touchdown of the night, taking a beating at the goal line, but holding on to pull Central within two points at 44-42 with 37 seconds left in the third.

The home team tried a little trickery on the conversion try, but Byron Nelson’s Joe Gruetman read the play and dropped Central for a loss, leaving them behind 42-40.

Senior quarterback Brennen Wooten drove Central for a 38-yard field goal try, but Cabrera was blocked by a strong Byron Nelson surge up front. However, the junior kicker would be given a second shot.

Central senior Donavyn Jackson just got enough of his fingertips on a Preston Haire pass to deflect the ball and force Byron Nelson to punt, giving the home team another try.

Martin busted a 26-yard return on Shank’s punt to set Central up with good field position, and Wooten led his team to the 2, setting up Cabrera’s game-winner.

“I think I am pretty good under pressure,” Cabrera said calmly after the game. “On the first kick they jumped really high. I was confident.

“Coach (Tony) Vu told me to just kick it like an extra point, and that was what I did.”

It was the first game-winner for the Central football team since Jacob Bible kicked a field goal to beat Abilene Cooper 31-28 as time expired in 2013.

Byron Nelson still had life, as Haire drove the team down the field, picking up a huge fourth-and-10 conversion with a 30-yard pass to Dan Ngoy.

The visitors would only get one more yard before Martin’s interception all but ended their chances.

“We had more pressure in the second half and giving our corners more of a shot,” Central head coach Brent Davis said. “We have to grow up, get better and make plays. We had to use our scheme to help us out tonight.

“Brock Martin made the play of the game. That guy is clutch. That kicker was well within his range. That was huge.”

Central and Byron Nelson went punch for punch for much of the first half, with Mondombo as the biggest thorn in the side of the Angry Orange defense.

The speedy wideout had six catches for 192 yards and four touchdowns in the first half, including scores from 50, 23, 66 and 7 yards out.

After halftime he was limited to just two grabs for 8 yards.

“It came down to schemes,” Martin said. “Defensive coordinator Mark Chester is a smart dude, and he game-planned for (Mondombo), who is an outstanding receiver. We backed off of him a little bit and it worked.”

Central’s defensive front held Byron Nelson’s running game in check all night, holding them to 42 yards, but Haire closed the game with 380 yards passing on 19 of 39 passing.

His second interception was the biggest of the night, however.

Wooten tossed three touchdown passes — with wide receiver Will Grindstaff throwing another — to help the Central offense keep up with Byron Nelson.

Wooten finished with 315 yards on 36 of 48 passing with one interception.

Cal Vincent (11 catches, 93 yards), Aaron Wooten (8-78) and Grindstaff (9-51) did most of the heavy lifting receiving the ball, but Antoine had a big night catching the ball out of the backfield, with four catches for 78 yards and a score.

Daven Manning, who had over 100 yards in the season-opening win over Del Rio, went down with an injury in the first half, but Antoine tacked on 58 yards rushing and Mike Brown added nine carries for 47 yards.

The total effort produced Central’s 12th straight win at San Angelo Stadium.

“It is fun to play at home,” Davis said. “This is a beautiful stadium, and now that we have a successful program everyone is coming out and it’s a great atmosphere.”

CENTRAL MIDWEEK: Bobcats show fight; depth at running back in comeback win

The Central High School football team learned a lot about itself in Friday’s home opener against Byron Nelson.

The 2015 Bobcats exhibited some of the same never-say-die attitude that has allowed the program to rally to wins in each of the last three years.

“Every football team you coach, even though they have some of the same players, they are all different year to year — with different leadership and different responsibilities for kids,” Central head coach Brent Davis said. “I think the biggest thing we took away was that we will fight. We will fight until the end.

“We’ve had that mentality for probably the last three years. We expect it, but we don’t know if it is going to be there until we do it.
Central overcame a 42-27 third-quarter deficit to score the final 16 points of the game to earn a 43-42 victory.

The team also saw just how much quality depth it has at running back.

Davis was high on Khalil Antoine and Mike Brown after spring ball and when Daven Manning joined the football program he added to the position.

So much so, that the team began working Brown at slot receiver wanting to use his game-breaking speed somewhere on the field.
When Manning went down with an ankle injury in the first half of Friday’s game, Brown was able to step right in to join Antoine and keep Central’s 1-2 punch out of the backfield going.

Antoine had “the game of his life” according to Central offensive coordinator Kevin Crane — not just because of his game-sealing 40-yard run on third-and-1 in the shadow of the goal post — but also because of his success catching the ball out of the backfield.

“Khalil Antoine busted it out of there,” Davis said. He has played really good for us. He was a good running back last year, but he never had a breakout moment. This year he has matured, has gotten bigger and all that experience is starting to play off.”

The senior hauled in a 25-yard TD pass from wide receiver Will Grindstaff on a trick play in the first quarter and also pulled in a 49-yard pass that set up a go-ahead score in the second quarter.

Antoine finished with four catches for 78 yards and a touchdown while adding 58 yards on seven carries on the ground.

For his part, Brown picked up several key first downs among his 47 yards on nine carries, including a vital role on Central’s game-winning drive that ended with Marc Cabrera’s 19-yard field goal late in the fourth.

“Khalil had maybe the best game of his whole life and Mike Brown stepped in and did some really good things as well,” Crane said. “He has really good speed and had gotten so many reps this spring that he knew what to do. I was really pleased with both of those guys.”

Brown said he was prepared to step in because of the time he has spent practicing at running back and receiver.

“(Manning) went out, and I just stepped in and did my thing,” Brown said. “Khalil did his job and we stepped up as a whole running back unit.

“It was routine for me. I am supposed to know both positions and we do it in practice. It wasn’t anything new.”

Friday again showed a greater emphasis by the Central offense to pass the ball more to its talented running backs. Antoine, Brown and Manning accounted for more than half of the Bobcats offense with 234 combined rushing and receiving yards.

“They don’t see us when we sneak out of the backfield. We are so good at it and we execute from there,” Antoine said. “With as fast as we are, it is hard for the defense to react when we go out in a passing route.”

                                                    Bobcat bites

Davis said that the team is focused on getting Manning’s ankle “well for district.” The Bobcats open District 3-6A play Oct. 9 at Abilene High. Antoine and Brown are expected to carry the load in the meantime.

Davis also said junior left guard Blake Furman is out for a couple of weeks after sustaining a dislocated shoulder against Byron Nelson. The Bobcats are working out a pair of players in practice before making the decision as to who will start against El Paso Franklin.

Franklin is one of the few regular opponents that holds a winning record against the Bobcats since Davis took over the program. The Cougars are 5-3 overall with four of the wins coming against Davis-led teams.

The teams will play in Monahans on Friday to reduce travel times for both teams. Last year the teams met in Hobbs, New Mexico. In the prior two seasons the teams had a home-and-home that called for one team to make the more than 400-mile trek each year.

                                                        HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Central-Franklin always a barn-burner

Bobcats look to avenge last year's loss

                                                        By Quinton Martinez

The players may be different, but recent history suggests that Friday’s contest between the Central Bobcats and El Paso Franklin will be out of the ordinary.

In 2005 the Cougars became the first El Paso team to ever beat the Bobcats. since that game in the Sun Bowl, Franklin has increasingly become a rival of the Central football team.

Since Brent Davis took over in 2009, the Cougars actually have a winning record over Central (4-3) including a 31-21 win last year on a dreary, cool night in front of an empty stadium in Hobbs, New Mexico.

“They have a better record against us than we do against them,” Davis said. “That goes to show you how tough that game is for us. Since we’ve gotten things turned around here, we’ve got a better record than almost everybody we’ve played. Not them. I have tremendous respect for their coaches.”

In their seven meetings since 2010, Central has twice lost to Franklin by a point, topped the Cougars in a five-overtime thriller at San Angelo Stadium and split a pair of playoff matchups.

Central’s 71-55 win over Franklin to open the 2013 campaign stood as the highest-scoring game in program history until an 84-49 win over Menlo, California, a week later.

“Coach (Daren) Walker is a tremendous coach, and they always have a wrinkle for us that they haven’t shown,” Davis said. “They always played extremely hard. Last year they outplayed us. They wanted it more than we did. Our kids got off the bus ****y, and we never got that fixed. They adjusted to the elements better. They just outplayed us.”

Central was held to 194 yards of offense, and quarterback Braden Hucks committed four turnovers in the loss as Franklin starred behind its NCAA Division I-bound prospects quarterback Baylor Romney (Nevada), running back Nick Bingham (Texas State) and receiver Gustavo Mendoza-Dorsett (Cornell).

“They do a great job, and they’ve kicked our tail,” Central offensive coordinator Kevin Crane said. “Hopefully we can play a little better this week. We had turnovers and shot ourselves in the foot. You can’t do that against a good team like Franklin.”
Central has scored 85 points in two games and edged Byron Nelson 43-42 last week, scoring the last 16 points and getting the game-winning field goal from Marc Cabrera with five minutes to play.

Franklin kept scoring but never caught Las Cruces Mayfield last week in a 69-49 loss to the New Mexico state power. Though the Cougars compiled 566 yards of offense, they committed three turnovers and gave up 513 yards to the Trojans.

Despite Central’s disappointment from last season, senior safety Beau Lasater said the focus is on this year.

“We’re not focused on last year,” Lasater said. “That was a different team, and we are a different team. We are focused on taking them down this year.

“They have another good quarterback, a good running back and skilled receivers. Everyone has to be on their game.”

Franklin running back Michael Faimalo had 212 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries last week, while quarterback Brandon Mueller connecting on exactly half of his pass attempts (15 of 30) for 300 yards and four TDs.

The Cougars’ big-play ability could challenge a Central defense that has yielded 632 passing yards in two games.

“We’ve got to get better,” Davis said of the pass defense. “We challenged them (Monday) morning. We’ve got to practice better and show that we can do it. We’ve got to go out on Friday night and do it — contest high balls, be in the position to play the ball and go do it. We aren’t doing that, and that has to change.”

Davis is also hoping for a large crowd to travel to Monahans and support the Bobcats, who are the designated home team against the Cougars.

“Last year was weird,” Davis said. “The weather was weird. No one was there. No one had a band there. The whole game it was quiet. We shouldn’t let that affect us, but it did. It isn’t different than going to Odessa. Hopefully we will have some Angry Orange fans that go. We need them, too. It is different when we don’t have an atmosphere.”

MONAHANS — Central quarterback Brennen Wooten had thrown for over 300 yards in his first two outings as a Bobcat.
It turns out that was just the appetizer.

Wooten took down one of the hallowed marks in Central Bobcats’ lore, topping Shea Morenz’s 371-yard performance against Abilene High 25 years ago, throwing for 422 yards on Friday night in a 60-14 pasting of rival El Paso Franklin at Estes Memorial Stadium in Monahans.

The TCU-bound senior signal caller nearly had the mark by halftime with 338 passing yards at the break as the Bobcats opened the game with an intensity that they were missing last year when the Cougars upended Central 31-21 in nondistrict play.

The Bobcats never let the thought of victory creep into Franklin’s mind as Central exploded for 36 second-quarter points to turn the contest into a rout by the break, leading 46-0.

“Our first half was about as good as we can play on both sides of the ball,” Central head coach Brent Davis said. “We were focused all week. This was a big game to us. We weren’t going to stumble like we did last year. That is a great football team and they are always going to play hard, but we were prepared.

“Our offense is getting better. Those pieces are coming together and playing together better. I think it is getting more cohesive and that is what you saw in the first half.”

Brennen Wooten hit nine different receivers on the night but played the hot hand on several occasions, connecting with his brother Aaron Wooten on consecutive passes on multiple occasions and letting 6-foot-7 receiver Adam West move the chains repeatedly in other drives.

The elder Wooten finished with his school-record 422 yards on 30 of 37 passing with four touchdowns. He also showed an aspect of his game that Angry Orange fans hadn’t seen thus far, using his mobility in the red zone to run for 29 yards and two scores on five carries.

“We knew we were going to have success,” the quarterback said. “That is a great program, but we started off hot and kept getting it going. That is a great football team, and we just played really well offensively.

“We’ve been preaching it all week. We knew we needed to start fast because that team is really good. We didn’t want to overlook them. I feel like we did a good job of that.”

Though Central had already established control of the contest, the game got out of hand in a 3:57 stretch late in the second quarter.

Brennen Wooten scrambled into the end zone from 9 yards out and Adam Nino tacked on the two-point conversion out of the polecat for a 32-0 lead with 4:28 until halftime.

A 19-yard Franklin punt set the Bobcats up with great field position, and Brennen Wooten found Aaron Wooten for a 7-yard touchdown strike on third-and-goal to extend the advantage to 39-0.

Franklin head coach Daren Walker chose to go for it on fourth down from his own 38, and the Bobcat D turned the Cougars back.

One play later, Brennen Wooten hit Donavan Moore wide open across the middle, who easily sped past the Franklin secondary for a 40-yard score. A difficult mountain became nearly impossible right before the half as Central opened a 46-0 lead.

In addition to posting the first-half shutout, the Bobcats limited the potent Franklin attack to just 76 yards through two quarters and 231 yards all night.

Defensive end Dylan Parsee, who lived in the Franklin backfield most of the night, remembered the 2014 loss to Franklin and said Friday’s win proves the 2015 Bobcats are on a different track.

“Tonight shows that we are on a different road than last year — the right road that we need to be on,” Parsee said. “I feel like we came out and played a lot better. Last year we played flat. We came out with a lot of intensity and good energy. I feel like it is a good win.”

With a 64-yard grab in the second half, Moore ended up as Central’s leading receiver with two receptions for 104 yards. West finished with seven catches for 97 yards and Aaron Wooten closed the night as the most targeted receiver with nine grabs for 78 yards and two TDs.

Khalil Antoine and Mike Brown were again hovering around 100 yards combined on the ground, finishing with 94 yards. Brown had 87 yards of total offense and had a rushing TD and a receiving TD.

Davis said that Brennen Wooten looked as comfortable as he has this season running with the ball on designed quarterback runs, which showed in his efficiency carrying the ball in the red zone.

The senior quarterback said that the offense still has room to grow despite the 60-point outburst.

“I think this can be a huge momentum boost, but there is still a lot that we can improve upon on offense and that is the cool part,” the senior said. “(The record) is really cool because Central is a great football program. This was a really cool night for me.”
