Peterman takes over a team that consistently makes the playoffs, that has been to the semi-finals the last two years only to lose to the eventual state champion, and that is known for its athletes..

New DeSoto football head coach Todd Peterman answers call, looks to finish

Todd Peterman has waited 22 years for the perfect job and with 16 Division I players in his program, the time is now to win DeSoto's first state crown.

A "seamless transition" has hit one minor snag for new DeSoto (Texas) head football coach Todd Peterman. It's just that the hitch rings several times a day. It's his iPhone. The device, much like his offense over the last seven seasons at DeSoto, is prolific and works succinctly. It's just that, well, enough is enough.

Last week he decided to count all the incoming and outgoing phone calls for one day. It reached 106.

"That's not even counting the texts," he said.

The phone barrage has led to the first adjustment for the 44-year-old from Oklahoma since he took over in February for seven-year head coach Claude Mathis, who was 74-18 before taking the running backs coach position at SMU.

"When I get home, I put the phone away," Peterman said. "I didn't do that before."

Before he was the team's offensive coordinator he spent 15 seasons working up the ranks at Denison, Tyler John Tyler, Terrell and Midland. This is his first full-time head-coaching gig, though he was DeSoto's interim head coach for a month in 2012 when Mathis took a job at the University of Houston before deciding to return.

That was a trial run for Peterman. This one is permanent, and with primarily the same staff, schemes and personnel as last season's 11-2 team, all appears smooth sailing. "We have all the same rules, same staff, we're running all the same stuff and the guys are getting after it," Peterman said last week by phone. "All the stuff on the field feels absolutely normal."

It's just the off-the-field stuff that has caused some misdirection.

Buttoning down a schedule, getting it to the right people, managing personnel — even those in the concession stands — are among countless details Peterman didn't coordinate while constructing one of the state's most prolific, multi-dimensional offenses.

The Eagles have averaged more than 500 yards and 46 points per game the last three seasons, and though former offensive line coach Jeff Wigington was elevated to offensive coordinator, Peterman will continue to call plays.

But not all of them. He never did before. This closely-knit staff works democratically.

"We all call plays," he said. "That's not changing either. We've all been very, very involved and will continue to be."

Some would assume he hasn't dealt with the pressure he's bound to get as the head honcho for Texas' top-ranked preseason team. The Eagles are No. 5 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Football Rankings to start things off.

Peterman said he doesn't feel any more tension than he did as the team's offensive coordinator. Class 6A football in Texas is not typical prep football. Everyone is under a large degree of scrutiny, especially at DeSoto, which has lost just four games in three seasons and sent 52 players to college programs over the last seven years.

Of the 31 coaches in the program, 19 are on-campus and the 12 others teach and coach at feeder schools. One of the best is three-time state championship defensive coordinator Mark Howeth, who has coached more than 35 seasons with stops at Denison, Duncanville and Highland Park. All of them have coveted jobs to do.

"I'd get fired just as quickly as the offensive coordinator as I would as head coach if I didn't do my job," Peterman said. "I'm confident we'll all get it done."

Peterman has made one small, but what he feels significant, staff change by hiring Courtney Sterling as a newly created special teams coordinator.

"Any way to find that extra edge," Peterman said.

The Eagles have knocked on the door of their first state title. They are a combined 38-4 the last three seasons, all of which have ended with competitive losses to eventual champion Allen.

With one of the state's top quarterbacks Tristen Wallace returning from injury and 15 other players who have received Division I offers, Peterman is confident the Eagles can rewrite history.

Or at least change the ending.

"I don't think people realize just how hard these kids work," he said. "I'm so proud of this program. We're not losing to any slouches. We've lost some very tough games. We just have to find a way to finish our last game."

DESOTO EAGLES HOPING TO SOAR IN 2015

On Saturday, High School Football America will release its Preseason Top 25. Between now and then, we’ll take a look at some of the top teams that are vying for spots in our national rankings.
Today we head to Texas to look at the DeSoto Eagles.


The facts speak for themselves when it comes to DeSoto over the last three years — only four losses, with three of them coming at the hands of three-time defending High School Football America “mythical” national champion Allen in the postseason. Two of those losses in 2012 and 2013 we’re in the state semifinals.
Last season, DeSoto finished #25 in the High School Football America Top 25.
Fast-forward to 2015 and the Eagles are an immensely talented team with former offensive coordinator Todd Peterman moving up to head coach to replace Claude Mathis, who is now an assistant coach at SMU. With Peterman at the helm, the Eagles offensive will continue to be the same juggernaut that we’ve come to know.
Over the last three seasons, DeSoto has averaged over 500 yards in total offense per game while scoring 46 points per contest.
Peterman’s first job was to find his replacement. He stayed within the program, promoting Jeff Wigington to OC after spending five years as the program’s offensive line coach.
“I’m still going to be highly involved in the offense,” said Peterman back in February when he appeared on the High School Football America Radio Show. “I’m still going to call plays. We’ve call it collectively on Friday nights — me and the line coach — so we’re still going to have that relationship.”
On the other side of the ball, Peterman brought-in Mark Howeth as his defensive coordinator. Howeth has been a part of three Texas state championship teams — Denison, Duncanville and Highland Park — in his 34 years as a coach in the state.
With senior quarterback Tristan Wallace back under center, the Eagles are expected to put up their traditional offensive numbers in 2015. Wallace is a 4-star prospect who has given his verbal commitment to Ohio State.
Last year, Wallace went-down with a broken ankle in the second game of the season. His replacement, then sophomore Jaylin Nelson filled-in and the Eagles never lost a beat. Wallace returned for the Eagles first round playoff win against Coppell, rushing for 183 yards and three touchdowns.
Nelson, who transferred to DeSoto last year from First Baptist Academy after leading that school to a Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools championship as a freshman, has left DeSoto for Duncanville, which will be led by former Skyline head coach Reggie Samples, who resigned at the end of the 2014 season after leading the Raiders to a #14 ranking in the High School Football America Top 25 in 2014.
Wallace has tons of weapons in a program that, at a point, just reloads. Over 15 players on this year’s team have already received offers from Division I schools.
Junior wide receiver Kadarrian Nixon, who led the team with 43 receptions last year, is back. Also add to the receiving mix, Dee Anderson, who is a 4-star LSU verbal commit who transferred to the Eagles after begin dismissed from the football team at West Mesquite for violating team rules. Last year Anderson caught 46 balls last year for 748 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Up front, the Eagles have plenty of experience and led by 6-5, 285-pound tackle Josiah Washington.
“We started five sophomores this last year, a lot of people don’t realize that,” said Peterman. “I’m not here to rebuild, I’m here to reload every year.”
The key to any state championship at any level in any state is defense. Last year’s squad gave-up over 23 points per game. Peterman has a good secondary led by A.J. Green, who had four interceptions last season.
DeSoto’s schedule is one of the best in the country. The Eagles play in the very tough District 8-6A that includes two-time defending Class 6A Division II state champ Cedar Hill and Mansfield — two teams that are ranked in the Dallas Morning News Preseason Class 6A Top 10.
We’ll find-out very early, how good this year’s squad is. DeSoto opens with four tough games against Arlington Martin, IMG Academy from Florida, South Oak Cliff and Cibolo Steele.

Whether it was drilling passes into tight coverage or dropping 50-yard floaters to receivers in stride, Eagles quarterback Tristen Wallace looked to be in mid-season form on the opening day of practice.
“It’s great to be back to the grind,’’ said the 6-3, 230-pound senior who showed tremendous promise at the start of his junior season as dual threat before suffering a broken leg. “I threw pretty well to the No.1′s. I haven’t had as much work with the second group, but it is going to come.’’
Playing only 10 quarters in 2014, Wallace threw for 641 yards and six touchdowns. He added 535 rushing yards and eight scores.
Getting acclimated: Look no further than DeSoto’s early schedule to understand why head coach Todd Peterman set his opening practice for the heat of the afternoon.
The Eagles’ first two games against Arlington Martin and IMG Academy of Bradenton, Fla., are Saturday starts with kickoff at 4 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
Kicking game on upswing: Kicking and punting are getting special emphasis this season with the addition of kicking coach Michael Lee, formerly of Colleyville Heritage.
Senior kicker V.J. Dyer showed field goal range to 47 yards in Monday’s practice.
Extra points and field goals have been an issue in recent seasons.

Trivia time:
How many field goals has DeSoto made over the last three seasons? A. 0 (Come on, you at least remember one.)
B. 7 (We’re talking three seasons … it’s got to be more than that, right?)
C. 9 (That would still only be three field goals per season.)
D. 12 (That would still be a low total for a span of 42 games.)
The answer is B.
DeSoto has only made seven field goals over the last three seasons. It made two last year, none in 2013 and five in 2012. The Eagles excelled at getting the ball in the end zone, we all know, but still, their troubles in the kicking game were also well-known.
“Extra points were kind of an adventure last year,” DeSoto coach Todd Peterman said.
Not surprisingly, one of the biggest things Peterman is changing in his first season as coach — Claude Mathis is now an assistant at SMU — is the emphasis on special teams. Peterman hired Courtney Sterling from Flower Mound Marcus as his special-teams coach, and he brought in a specific kicking coach, Michael Lee, who previously worked at Colleyville Heritage.
“It’s going to make a difference at the end of the season,” Peterman said.
It might already be making a difference. During Monday’s first practice, DeSoto senior kicker V.J. Dyer hit a 47-yard field goal. There was no rush or pressure, but it’s a start.

Word came down on Friday afternoon that Guyer girls basketball coach Andrea Robinson was recommended by DeSoto administrators for the school’s vacant girls hoops job.
That, in itself, is significant given the fact she led Guyer to a District 5-6A championship this past season and made the Lady Wildcats a competitor at the state’s largest class after just one previous playoff appearance at that level prior to her arrival a year ago, when Guyer finished second in the district.
In her two seasons at Guyer, she’s put the Lady Wildcats on the map as a perennial contender. She’s not finished at Guyer yet, at least not officially, as she said earlier today that nothing “was even close to official” with DeSoto. She added that more would be known next week and that she has a meeting with human resources on Monday, but not before making it clear nothing was official on Monday afternoon.
“This job has been offered to me but it’s pending final details still,” Andrea Robinson said. “Nothing is official yet.”
But that’s not the end of the story, and be honest, it’s already in your mind: What might Robinson’s departure — if it happens — mean for Guyer football and star quarterback Shawn Robinson, who happens to be Andrea’s son and one of the top high school quarterbacks in the country entering his senior year.
We’d be lying if we said the fact that DeSoto, like Guyer, is a perennial football power didn’t make it interesting as an enticing move for the entire family, as her husband, Othell, is a coach on Guyer’s football staff. But again, nothing is official with Andrea, or Shawn and Othell, and the two aren’t a packaged deal if history tells us anything. However, sources indicate talks involving a family move are on the table and it is indeed a possibility.
Shawn Robinson is committed to TCU and is the No. 1 dual threat quarterback in the country. Just because Andrea Robinson leaves Guyer (if she does), doesn’t mean Shawn Robinson will leave Guyer. It’d be no different than when Shawn was a freshman at Saginaw Chisholm Trail when his dad was on staff there and his mom was the head coach at Cedar Hill.
It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out, and with spring football on the horizon, you’d think John Walsh would want to know whether he’ll have his senior quarterback for 2017. If not, he’d be fine rolling with junior Luke Stillwell, who started one game last year and rushed for more than 100 yards in a win over Trophy Club Nelson. Also, to make matters juicier, Guyer and DeSoto are set to play in Week 2.

Good game and test for the Eagles before bye week and district play. Kinda game you want and hope for(but don't know) when scheduling. A challenging and competitive game that pushes your team. Not an excuse but six hour bus drive can set in with fatigue and mental preparation(lose not same focus ), missing two D1 lineman. Took a while to get back to Eagle football (timing-tempo) but got it going. No team panic when behind but stayed together and did what do best.Put/get ball in hands of playmakers Good challenge for the Eagle defense all night that help identified areas needing improvement. Adversity and overcoming adversity is always a tool to learn from that will help later on. Pass defense has to improve and must put pressure on qb. Fourth quarter play showed more of what team is composed of and mental fortitude.
